Activation
The raw materials are treated with steam or are chemically activated. Chemically activated products
are hardly used in water treatment, because of possible residues.

During the activation process microcristalline carbon is produced, which is interspersed with a large
number of statistically distributed pores of different sizes. At temperatures from 800 to 1000 ° C the
carbon of the raw material is partly gassed in a nitrogen atmosphere.(
(C + H2O → CO + H2). The reaction temperature and time, and the concentration of O2 , CO2 ,
H2O , CO and H2 in this process affect the quality and thus the use of activated carbon. Activated carbon is produced in
multiple-hearth incinerators , kilns, or multi-shaft fluidized bed reactors.
